In the department of La Guajira, you will find two of our favorite destinations in the Colombian Caribbean: Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas. These places showcase immense natural and cultural beauty, reflected in their golden sand beaches, scenic viewpoints, and the resilient Wayuu indigenous community, which overcomes challenges daily while working on beautiful crafts.

When looking for adventure trips in Colombia, remember that in the extreme north of the country the beaches of Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas await you. In addition, along the way, you can visit other tourist places such as the Salinas de Manaure, the Pilón de Azúcar and the Taroa Dunes.

Important: Although Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas are cool places to visit in Colombia, getting there on your own is very difficult because they are remote, there are no public transportation routes, and the access roads are neither paved nor signposted. The safest option is to book this 3-day tour departing from the city of Riohacha.

Undoubtedly, one of the best tourist spots in Colombia is Caño Cristales. This destination is located in the Meta department, in the Parque Nacional Natural Sierra de La Macarena, between the plains of the Eastern Llanos, the Andean foothills, and the Amazon jungles. It is recognized worldwide as the river of five colors.

Although Caño Cristales is one of the coolest places to visit in Colombia, you should know that it is not possible to visit all year round. The season when you can see the colorful river starts between July and November. During these months, the macarenia clavigera, the plant that colors the river, blooms. The rest of the year, the caño dries up.

The fastest and safest way to get to Caño Cristales is by taking a flight to La Macarena, Meta. From La Macarena, you will need to take a boat and a 4×4 vehicle to the park entrance. It is important to note that the protected area receives a very limited number of visitors per day, so it is necessary to book your visit in advance.
